SCHEDULE CHANGE BRINGS KAREEM'S DEBUT TO DODGE CITY
NBA legend Abdul-Jabbar will make pro coaching debut in Civic Center!
DODGE CITYNBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will coach his first professional game on the sidelines of the Dodge City Civic Center when his Oklahoma Storm open their season at Dodge City against the Legend on Sunday, April 21.
The United States Basketball League released a revised schedule for the upcoming season after the Atlantic City Seagulls ceased operations in early February.
The Legend will still open up at home against the St. Joseph Express on Saturday, April 20, but will make the opening weekend a doubleheader by welcoming the Storm to the Civic Center the next night.
"It's a big rivalry for us already, considering their location and the fact that we beat them for the USBL Championship in 2000," Legend General Manager Tom Nelson said. "We are excited to bring Kareem's pro coaching debut to Dodge City. It should make for a great weekend of basketball."
After the opening weekend, the Legend will go on the road for five games against the four other teams in the USBL's Midwest Division, including games at Salina against the Kansas Cagerz on April 30 and May 4.
Abdul-Jabbar and the Storm will make a return visit to Dodge City on Wednesday, June 12.
The Kansas Cagerz will play three times in Dodge City, a weekend doubleheader on June 8 and 9, and in the final home game of the season on Sunday, June 23.
The Legend will make a 12-day road trip between May 17 and 28 to play the five teams in the USBL's Eastern Division.
The schedule features two rematches of the 2001 USBL Championship Game when Pennsylvania visits Dodge City on May 15 and Dodge City plays in Allentown on May 19.
The USBL will consist of Eastern and Midwest Divisions in 2002. Joining the Legend in the Midwest Division is the Kansas Cagerz, the Oklahoma Storm, the St. Joseph (MO) Express and the St. Louis Skyhawks.
The Eastern Division includes the Florida Sea Dragons, the Brevard Blue Ducks, the Pennsylvania Valley Dawgs, the Adirondack Wildcats and the Brooklyn Kings.
Single game tickets for 2002 games will go on sale on March 1 at the Dodge City Convention and Visitors Bureau at 3rd and Wyatt Earp Blvd. in Dodge City.
